Council meetings were held in the Guildhall until November 1967. The administrative offices were in the Town Hall, which is today known as the Market Cross.

Cllr E E Watson speaking on a recommendation from Markets and Estates Committee that responsibility for air raid shelter demolition should be transferred to Highways, Works and Plans Committee. He wanted no more delays, as he had personally examined some air raid shelters that were in an appalling condition and being used as doss houses. They should be demolished as soon as possible.

Mr P E Roberton, the Town Clerk. The Town Clerk needed to have legal qualifications, signified by wearing a wig and gown. The last legally qualified Council Chief Executive to wear the wig and gown at Council meetings was Mr G R N Toft, who retired in 2001.

Alderman S J M Sampson, Deputy Mayor, introduces proposed new standing orders to be considered for approval at next month's council meeting.

Cllr F W Benham, (a building contractor), standing to propose that the council holds a special meeting to discuss the new standing orders. Alderman Sampson replied that each committee should consider its own areas and then report to council as provided for in existing standing orders. On the left is Cllr Gooch, and on the right is Cllr Mrs Bulling.
