Archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langton, had the idea of a new charter. He had technically been Archbishop since 1207, but his appointment by the Pope had been hotly disputed by King John. Langton dared not show his face in England until the King finally accepted him as Archbishop in 1213. |
Richard de Clare had a castle at Clare in Suffolk and another at Tonbridge in Kent, and was very wealthy. His son Gilbert de Clare was also one of the 25 Barons. |
William Marshall the Younger, in contrast to his father, was less inclined to take the King's side.The Bigods were anothe great family with a powerbase in East Anglia. Roger Bigod was Earl of Norfolk and held Framlingham Castle. His son Hugh joined his father in the conspiracy. William de Huntingfield was another East Anglian Baron.
