Bradfield St George Brick works disused by 1904

Bradfield St George Brickworks

Bradfield Combust, Bradfield St Clare and Bradfield St George all show evidence of brick making, according to the lists published in 1988 by C J Pankhurst for the British Brick Society newsletters, 21, 22 and 23.

Bradfield St George seems to have been the most recent, being set up in 1871 by John Cocksedge, and lasting until 1892. The final owner was George Harvey Nunn, who took over the works in 1885, but died in 1887, although the brickworks continued until 1892.

George Harvey Nunn was born in 1819 in Bradfield St George, and died in 1887 at Eldo Farm in Bury St Edmunds, aged 68. He became Mayor of Bury St Edmunds in 1864 and 1866. (If this is the correct person)

White's Directory of Suffolk for 1892 lists Brick and Tile manufacturers, one of which is:

"Nunn George H (Exors) Bradfield St George, Bury"

Clearly his brickworks survived his death for some years.

Details of the Bradfield St George brickworks by 1904 show a few buildings set in a rough, neglected field. There is no kiln visible.

The Suffolk Heritage Explorer lists Bradfield St George Brickworks as monument record BSG 010, "Brick Works and Kiln/s operated by John Cocksedge 1871; Frederick W Ling 1874; George Harvey Nunn 1885-1892." As can be seen from the Suffolk Heritage Explorer map there is little or no trace of the brickworks remaining today .

The brick illustrated here is hitherto unknown, but if it says GHN instead of CHN, then it is believed to come from the Bradfield St George brickworks from 1885 to 1892, when operated by George Harvey Nunn.
