Evidence from Grave Goods within burials

Coffin made from Barnack limestone. This was found in the cemetery across the road from the village site. However, it was probably removed from the Romano-British cemetery in the nearby village of Lackford, in order for it to be used for the body of an important man at West Stow. (The skeleton is a clay reproduction.)

Two animal headed cruciform brooches from West Stow cemetery, dated to the 6th century. The horse head ends seem to have also been given human masks and beaked heads.

West Stow Cemetery spearheads and bone items. These were excavated during the 19th century and exact details of graves etc do not exist. 11 is a bone comb case and 12 is a bone needle, two weaving pins and a bone handle.

West Stow Cemetery beads. Object 3 is an annular brooch in cast bronze. 4 is a bronze bracelet. 9 is two silver pendants.

West Stow Cemetery objects relating to female burials. Including brooches and other dress fittings. 1 shows cruciform brooches. 2 are described as 4 small-long brooches. 5 are all tweezers, 6 are wrist clasps, and 7 are mounts for handles from bronze bowls.

Objects recovered from Mitchell's Hill in Icklingham. This was another Anglo-Saxon cemetery located beside the old Roman settlement, but on its western side.

Grave goods from female burials at Eriswell, including brooches, buckles, beads, girdle hangers. These were dug in 1964.

Grave goods from male burials, including Westgarth Gardens grave 49, showing 5th century objects. These include rounded shield bosses, spearheads and a knife.

These 7th century male objects show that shield bosses were now tall and pointed. Objects numbered 1 are a shield boss and handle, with two buckles, from Grave 3, at Northumberland Road, Bury St Edmunds. The lower shield boss is from West Stow cemetery. The knife is from Westgarth Gardens grave 1. The bone comb from West Stow cemetery is one of very few female objects discovered in 7th century graves.

Grave goods from the female burials in graves numbered 7, 13, 16, 27, 31 and 48 excavated at Westgarth gardens in Bury St Edmunds. This cemetery was excavated during 1972 and so modern recording methods were used, and the objects retained intact by the site owners.

Grave goods from the wealthy male burial in grave number 51 excavated at Westgarth gardens in Bury St Edmunds in 1972. As well as the usual shield and spearheads, the grave contained an intact glass beaker, probably brought in from Kent. There was also a rare sword.

Unusual metal grave goods from the female burial in grave number 36 excavated at Westgarth gardens in Bury St Edmunds. The ring is a bronze mount from a wooden bowl.
