This distant view seen from the Station Hill in December, 2015, shows the cap of the gasholder in the process of removal. You will need to click on the image to see the larger version.

As soon as the cap was opened, this first hole was cut into the side of the gasholder to allow access for any further evaluations before proceeding.

When serious demolition began, it was necessary to cut a new access through the existing pedestrian gate and adjacent hedgerow. This would allow the heavy machine needed for this work to gain entrance on to the site.

By 6th January, the internal skins had largely been removed. They can be seen folded up like giant sheets of cardboard.

Although much of the inside and unseen skins have been removed, the outer skin still looked like this through the main site gates. Note, however, that the previously upstanding access ladders have been removed.

This picture shows the demolition machine in action, now working on removing the remaining outer skin.

Now the outer skin is being folded up ready for removal off site.

The last remaining piece of the upper section is removed.

With the bulk of the outer skin now removed, the skyline no longer includes the last gasholder built in Bury St Edmunds.
(Picture dated 15th January, 2016.)

By mid-January the outer skin was reduced to a four foot high 'wall'.
(Picture dated 15th January, 2016.)

This is a close -up of the demolition machine. An enormous pair of cutting jaws make up the business end of it.
(Picture dated 15th January, 2016.)

The remainder of the lower part of the skin is also folded up ready for removal.
(Picture dated 15th January, 2016.)

Very little of the skin remains when seen here on Sunday January 17th.
(Picture dated 17th January, 2016.)

By the end of the week, only final tidying up is being undertaken.
(Picture dated 26th January, 2016.)

By the following month the base has been tidied up completely and the demolition machine removed. The site is sealed off so that it can only be viewed through the hedge.
