Salvage recording of masonry wall material exposed in a water pipe trench.

The apparently in situ wall fragment did not appear to align with the Abbey Church.

1995 Watching Brief WEST FRONT OF THE ABBEY
Site code: BSE123.

Monitoring of drainage works behind the West Front revealed the in situ remains of pillar bases of the Abbey church very close to the surface. Large loose fragments of fallen and demolished material was found throughout the trench. A further trench in front of the West Front demonstrated far less rubble than those within the site of the church.

2000- 2001 Excavation NORMAN COTTAGE

Excavation for a new cellar on the site beside the Norman Tower and straddling the Abbey precinct wall recorded some 27 inhumations from the 'Great Churchyard' of St James's and St Mary's dating to the 14th century. The precinct wall was also recorded. Further burials were recorded in 2001.

2001 Evaluation ABBEY GARDENS: BOUNDARY WALL

Two trial holes excavated to inspect the footings of a collapsed section of boundary wall recorded surviving foundations of mortared flint. Work also involved the sorting and depiction of Abbey stones released by the collapse.
